What Started As Siding Turned Into A Structural Rebuild

Finished siding repair section with new vinyl siding by Valhalla Construction

This one started as a straightforward siding replacement. Once the old siding came off in sections, it was clear the job was bigger than expected — moisture and insect damage had compromised a significant portion of the wall structure underneath, hidden from view for years. Rather than re-side over a problem, we opened up the affected areas, rebuilt the framing, replaced the windows and doors that were part of the damaged sections, and re-sided as we went. The homeowner had no idea the structural damage was there until we found it.

What the job included

  • Siding removed in sections to access and assess wall structure
  • Moisture and insect (carpenter ant) damage discovered in wall framing
  • Damaged framing removed and rebuilt to code
  • Windows and doors replaced in the affected wall sections
  • New house wrap and insulation at repaired sections
  • New vinyl siding installed over repaired and original wall sections

This was a siding & stone veneer project. If you are planning something similar, that page covers how we approach the work and what to expect.

How it came together

01

Opening up the wall

Siding came off in sections rather than all at once — there was no need to strip the whole building down when only certain areas needed structural attention. That approach let us keep the job moving without unnecessary extra work.

Structural repair

Behind the old siding, moisture and carpenter ant damage had eaten into a significant portion of the wall framing — the homeowner had no idea. We rebuilt the affected framing, replaced the windows and doors in those sections, and insulated and wrapped before closing the wall back up.

Re-siding

With the structure sound again, we re-sided the repaired sections and worked our way back up the building. Not every job needs to be gutted to be fixed right — sometimes the smarter approach is finding the problem, fixing exactly that, and moving on.
