A shower that leaks in year three almost never fails at the tile — it fails behind it. Before tile goes on, the shower area needs a proper waterproof membrane, a floor sloped correctly to the drain, and seams and corners sealed the way the assembly is actually designed to be sealed rather than caulked and hoped for. That work happens before anything visible goes in, which is exactly why it gets skipped on cheaper jobs and exactly why it does not get skipped on ours.

A tub-to-shower conversion changes the footprint and usually the plumbing rough-in along with it, which is where most of the real cost and time in this kind of project actually lives, not in the fixture itself.

The finished result looks straightforward. Getting there was not.

An acrylic shower or tub surround installs faster and with fewer seams than a fully tiled one, and is the more practical choice for a rental unit, a basement suite, or a bathroom where budget matters more than a custom look. A fully tiled shower, like the custom installation at Valhalla Estates, costs more in labour but allows a size, layout, and finish a prefabricated surround cannot match.
