Most pressure-treated decks in Moncton are built the same way and last wildly different amounts of time, and the reason almost never comes down to the boards. Pressure-treated lumber is the most common decking material across Greater Moncton because it is the most affordable route to a solid, code-compliant deck. Why pressure-treated is still the default here

Pressure-treated lumber has preservative forced into it under pressure, which is what lets it sit against soil and weather without rotting the way untreated lumber would. It is the least expensive of the three common decking materials, and for a lot of homeowners that is the right call — particularly when the deck is one part of a larger project and the budget has other places it needs to go.

Footings, drainage, and the parts you stop seeing

What actually determines how long one of these decks lasts is the work you stop being able to see once the boards go down. Footings in southern New Brunswick need to reach below frost depth, which through Moncton, Dieppe, Riverview and out along the Fundy side means roughly 1.2 metres. A footing that stops short will heave with the ground every freeze-thaw cycle and take the structure with it over a few winters. Drainage matters just as much — water that cannot get away from a post base or out of a joist pocket is the single most common reason a deck fails early here. Fasteners have to be rated for treated lumber as well, or the connections corrode long before the wood gives out.

What the material can do — the curved pool deck

The pool deck we built is the clearest example of what the material can do when the framing is planned for it. Radial deck boards had to be cut and fitted around the curve of an above-ground pool, with a curved privacy surround following the same arc — pressure-treated handled all of it, because the framing underneath was laid out for the shape from the start rather than adapted to it afterward.

Multi-level work on Ayer Avenue

On Ayer Avenue in Moncton, the same material went into a multi-level build with a pergola over the upper section and a privacy screen along one side. Pressure-treated is often treated as the plain option, but the limit is usually the design and the framing, not the lumber.

The honest tradeoff on finish

The honest tradeoff is finish. Pressure-treated will grey out if it is left alone, and holding its original colour means restaining it periodically. Plenty of homeowners across the region never do it, and the deck still stands — it simply weathers and shows its age sooner than it otherwise would. That is a decision worth making deliberately when the deck goes in, rather than discovering it in year eight and feeling like something went wrong.

When to book

Timing works differently here than most people assume. We build through the year rather than only in summer, and the practical constraint is scheduling rather than weather — spring and early summer are when calendars fill and material lead times stretch across Greater Moncton. Booking earlier in the year is the way to get the date you want, not the way to avoid frost.
