A covered deck or gazebo in Moncton exists to solve a specific problem: the open deck season here is short, and a good part of it is either too wet or too hot to sit out in. Why a roof changes the structure from the footings up

A covered deck is a different structure from an open one starting at the footings, because it carries a real roof load plus whatever snow sits on it through a New Brunswick winter. That changes post sizing, footing diameter and depth, and frequently means an engineered drawing goes in with the permit. This is not a detail to move past quickly — a roofed structure built on footings sized for an open deck is a problem that stays hidden for years and then becomes far more expensive to fix than it would have been to size correctly at the start.

A full covered build, start to finish

On one covered build we ran the whole sequence: materials staged on site, elevated platform framing on posts, platform decking, roof structure framed over it, and a full screened enclosure to finish. Each stage looks like an unrelated job until the last one. The interior ceiling was finished in cedar with a hot tub built into the plan from the beginning, which meant the framing had to carry that load too rather than have it added as an afterthought.

Gazebo or covered deck — which fits the property

The difference between a gazebo and a covered deck is mostly about whether it touches the house. A gazebo is typically freestanding, placed where it makes sense in the yard. A covered deck extends off the house, usually connecting to an interior door. Both work here. Which one fits comes down to where the usable space actually is on the property and whether the connection to the house matters for how it will be used.

Adding a roof to an existing deck

Covering a deck you already have is a real option rather than something that had to be decided at the original build. If the existing deck is structurally sound, a roof can often be added over it — the same footing and load questions apply, they just get answered against a structure already standing. That assessment happens on site, because the answer depends entirely on what was put in the ground the first time.

The light question, before framing

The one thing worth thinking through at design stage is light. A roof over a deck reduces daylight reaching whatever windows sit under or behind it, and how much depends on placement, roof pitch, and how far the structure projects. It is a solvable design question and a poor surprise, so it belongs in the conversation before framing rather than after.

Snow load across the region
